Rearranging My Home ... and My Life

Recently, Dustin and I have been preparing our home for the madness (and joy) that awaits it. Now that we have this task ahead of us, I realize how very poorly we had our house set up for this very thing.

Part of that could be because we never planned on staying in it long enough to have children in it. Also, when we moved in a little over 3 1/2 years ago, I think we were both a little lazy. We haven't used our upstairs much during our time here; we've used it more for storage space than anything else. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've been up there more the past 24 weeks than I had the entire 3 years before that.

For the first time ever, though, as we move and rearrange everything, I am trying not to do "the easy thing" that I know I'm going to have to go back and fix later. Why? Because who knows how much time I'll have to fix it later? Will it wait 5 or more years before I get to it, driving me crazy that whole time? Maybe, maybe not. I could be overestimating how busy I'll be with a little one. Either way, I'd like to get things as together as I can while I'm able. I guess that's the nesting instinct for you!

What have we done so far?

1. The Office - We've moved Dustin's desk out of the office to use at the top of the stairs. We also moved the tv out of the office and into the main guest bedroom. We may move my office desk into the office. We then rearranged the furniture in the office and moved the small (full) guest bed from Graham's future room into the office.

2. The Main Guest Bedroom - We moved the table at the top of the stairs into the main guest bedroom (in addition to the tv from the office). We also began a pile of things that we want to put in a garage sale in this room.

3. The Attic - Yes, we even had to do stuff with the attic. We mainly went in there and organized it, so that we had room to put more stuff since we will no longer be using the other rooms as storage space. We still have some more work to do here, but it's a lot better after today.

4. The Other Guest Bedroom/Graham's Future Room - We had the most work to do in this room, I think. We moved a ton of winter clothes, work and law school papers and other miscellaneous things out of the room, organizing, throwing away, and adding to the garage sale pile along the way. Once it was completely cleared out and vacuumed, we started moving the baby stuff we have in.

5. Babymoon is booked!!!

What do we still have to do?

1. The Attic - We still have some organizing to do. Also, we need to go through everything and make sure none of it needs to go into the garage sale pile.

2. The Office - We have a
ton of papers we need to go through and shred/trash. We have some other miscellaneous baby stuff in there that we need to move to the attic when it's ready. Like I mentioned above, we may move my office desk/chair into this room. We also need to make the guest bed (the sheets are sitting on top of it).

3. The Main Guest Bedroom - We need to get all the things in the garage sale pile down to Little Rock to go in my parents' garage sale. We also have some miscellaneous paintings/picture frames in there we either need to hang or put in the attic.

4. Graham's Future Room - We need to continue moving and rearranging things as we get them and begin decorating.

Not too bad, considering we still have about 16 more weeks to do all this! I'm sure there will be another blog post (and I'll post pictures) when it's all ready!

  3. What is a babymoon? Also, just fair warning....I went into labor with my first at 37 weeks. So you might not want to count on having the entire 40 weeks to get stuff done! I know it sure took me by surprise!

  4. Wendy, it's just a trip before baby comes. I hope to have everything done well in advance of 37 weeks. At this point, all we have to do is #2/#3 on that second list (until we get more baby stuff). Some of it might have to wait until after my showers to see what we get/what we need to buy.

  5. Ah....you know, we did that. Didn't call it a "babymoon", but we did go to Memphis for the weekend when I was 7 months pregnant. It was nice, but not near as fun as it would have been if I hadn't been pregnant. LOL!

  6. Yeah, I know what you mean. There's a lot of "adventurous" stuff I can't do, but oh well, ... I know we'll still have a relaxing/fun time and I'm very happy we get to do it before Graham gets here and we won't have many chances to get away just the two of us. : ) Good thing I'm not 7 months along yet too.
